HR Hero Audio Conference on CD
Presented by by Larry Rector
March 21, 2006
Even though the live seminar on this topic has already taken place, you can still hear it! For your convenience, we've recorded it on CD, so you can listen when you have time or share it with colleagues in your organization.
Recent workplace tragedies at mines and postal facilities seem miles away when viewed on T.V. "That could never happen here," we think.
But it's HR's obligation to have a basic emergency response plan in place now, so you don't end up contributing to the chaos when the unthinkable happens.
To make quick work of this important task, spend just 90 minutes and join your colleagues around the nation via telephone for the all new audio conference, Crisis Management: Lessons from Real-Life Tragedies. This interactive event will focus on the main components of your crisis management strategy:
- Safety. What safeguards should you have in place? You get guidance for setting up your safety team, establishing your emergency procedures, and conducting safety drills
- Legal contact. Who should you contact after an emergency? You'll learn why it's important to inform legal counsel and what kind of information you should be prepared to provide
- Mandatory contacts. Many state and federal agencies require notification within a certain time period after employee injuries or other emergencies. You'll learn how to build that contact list in advance
- Public relations. During the Sago mine tragedy, wrong information was given to the victims' families, and it become the story of the day on national television. Learn how inquiries from family members, the media, and government officials must be dealt with effectively to avoid a PR nightmare
- Managing the Aftermath. How to prepare for post-accident governmental inquiries or grand jury investigations.
- Defending the Lawsuit. Tragedies are often followed fingerpointing and the risk of civil litigation. You get tips for insulating yourself better from potential exposure, class-action claims, and damage to your company's public image.
- Remedial measures. Larry will discuss some of the pros and cons of instituting remedial measures, the effect on any civil litigation, and other potential advantages or disadvantages of a “fix.”

The Sago Mine tragedy was a very moving event for West Virginia attorney Larry Rector, who owns a cabin a couple of miles down the Buckhannon River from the mine entrance. Larry is an attorney with Steptoe & Johnson PLLC and practices in the firm's Clarksburg office. His practice is focused on employment discrimination, wrongful discharge, industrial injuries, and mine safety and health. He has represented clients before the MSHA's Special Investigation Unit and the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health Safety and Training. Larry has also conducted a variety of postaccident investigations and has counseled a variety of clients in dealing with postaccident governmental inquiries. In the wake of the Sago disaster, he has done additional research on crisis management plans and what they should include.
