"We are serious about immigration enforcement," Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in a recent Washington Post article. The Department is stepping up convictions of American business owners, HR directors, and managers for hiring and harboring illegal aliens.
If the federal government has its way, employers could be receiving "no-match" letters as early as June, forcing HR and management to check suspect Social Security numbers and investigate workers with questionable identities. And on February 22, the U.S. Attorney General announced a 25% increase in civil fines for employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
Learn how to counter these aggressive enforcement tactics while remaining in compliance with the law by participating in the all-new HR Hero audio conference, New Immigration Compliance Pressure:
How HR Can Reduce the Heat.
In just 90 minutes, Christopher Thomas, an attorney with years of experience in employment-based immigration law, will provide an overview of the federal government's latest enforcement initiatives, as well as:
- A clear breakdown of the steep new fines and possible criminal penalties and how these punishments may be imposed on employers
- Your FIRST course of action if you discover documentation for an employee that seems suspect
- The pros and cons of using the E-Verify system. The government is stepping up efforts to get employers to use the system, in spite of serious questions about its accuracy.
- The real dangers of questioning an applicant's or employee's citizenship authorization, and the dangers of NOT questioning authorization
- The personal legal risks faced by HR professionals, business owners, and managers. Recently a former HR director at a poultry plant in Butterfield, Missouri, was convicted of charges related to illegal aliens, and the sentence could be 10 years.
- The status on "no match" letters. The Bush administration recently announced that it plans to renew its efforts to crack down on U.S. companies that knowingly hire illegal immigrants.
