HR Hero Audio Conference on CD and Streaming Audio
Presented by Susan Fahey Desmond
July 10, 2008
With each CD purchase, you get FREE access to streaming audio. CD and streaming audio are available 3 days after each live event.
Even though the live seminar on this topic has already taken place, you can still hear it! For your convenience, we've recorded it on CD and audio stream, so you can listen when you have time or share it with colleagues in your organization.
Workplace race discrimination charges rose to 30,510 in fiscal year 2007 -- their highest level since 1994. In fact, race claims topped ALL discrimination filings received in 2007, according to the
U.S. Equal Opportunity Commission.
In response to this rising tide of charges, the EEOC has developed the
E-RACE Initiative (Eradicating Racism And Colorism from Employment).
What does the E-RACE Initiative mean for employers? How can you prevent your organization from becoming the target of a racial discrimination class-action suit?
Get the answers to these questions and learn how to create a racially hostile-free work environment by registering for the all-new HR Hero audio conference, Race Discrimination at Work: What HR Must Do to Stem the Rising Tide of Complaints.
In just 90 minutes, experienced employment law attorney and in-demand SHRM speaker Susan Fahey Desmond will give you a complete overview of the EEOC's new anti-discrimination initiative, real-life examples of recent racial discrimination cases, and the do's and don'ts for complying with anti-discrimination laws.
You'll also learn:
- How E-RACE meshes with other EEOC initiatives such as:
--
The Systemic Initiative by addressing race and color issues with class and systemic implications
--
The Youth@Work initiative by fighting disparate treatment of youth based on race and color
--
The LEAD Initiative by challenging exclusionary employment policies that adversely affect people of color who also have disabilities
- What actually constitutes race discrimination: The definition may not be as clear cut as some believe. Discrimination using "code" words may be difficult to identify. For example, the EEOC recently filed a harassment case where an employee repeatedly called a black coworker "Cornelius," a reference to an ape character in the film Planet of the Apes.
- The various forms of discrimination employers MUST guard against, including: recruiting, hiring, advancement, harassment, hostile work environment, compensation, segregation, classification, retaliation and more
- The difference between race and color discrimination, and new studies cited by the EEOC where Vanderbilt University and the University of Georgia have found skin tone can affect earnings and the likelihood of being hired.
- How employers may discriminate without even considering race: Recent EEOC studies reveal that some employers make selection decisions based on names, arrest and conviction records, employment and personality tests, and credit scores -- all of which may disparately affect people of color.
- How video resumes and new high-tech hiring tools can further complicate this hot-button issue
