Workplace Safety and Hispanic Employees: Overcoming Language and Cultural Barriers
Presented by Isaac Botbol
June 15, 2006

Even though the live seminar on this topic has already taken place, you can still hear it! For your convenience, we've recorded it on CD, so you can listen when you have time or share it with colleagues in your organization.

Workplace Safety and Hispanic Employees: Overcoming Language and Cultural Barriers

The close to 45 million Hispanics living in the United States today face different workplace challenges. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Hispanics experience the highest rate of fatal workplace injuries of all reported racial and ethnic groups.

One culprit: language barriers that dilute the effectiveness of safety training for those who don’t speak English. In fact, OSHA reports that 25 percent of Hispanic work-related fatalities it investigates are linked to language and cultural barriers.

That’s why it’s up to you to create programs that alert non-English speaking Hispanics to the dangers that exist in your workplace, and demonstrate ways to avoid them. But how?

Step one in dealing with this safety training gap is participating in an all- new audio conference: Workplace Safety and Hispanic Employees: Overcoming Language and Cultural Barriers

In 90 minutes, you’ll find out how to create an action plan that goes beyond simply translating safety initiatives into Spanish. You’ll receive the latest communication, training and cultural strategies for increasing safety awareness and adoption among non-English Hispanic workforce, including:

  • Why Hispanics have the highest accident and fatality rates in the workplace
  • How the language barrier and English literacy proficiency levels directly impact the safety of the Hispanic workforce
  • The dangers to employers and employees of not communicating potentially dangerous workplace situations
  • Overview of key OSHA regulations and expectations in today’s workplace
  • Understanding and addressing cultural perceptions toward the learning process, including “La Vergüenza”, and its impact on Spanish-speaking employees involved in training programs
  • The roles of senior managers and line supervisors in creating safe work environments
  • How to institute leadership training efforts that help line supervisors communicate workplace expectations and safety issues
  • How to develop effective training programs that increase non-English speaking Hispanic employees understanding and retention of key safety practices
  • How to establish supervisory programs that increase workplace safety awareness, including bilingual mentors, job shadowing programs and safety committees
  • How to use alternative communication and training programs
  • How to craft and conduct separate Spanish-language safety orientations
  • How to ensure written training materials acknowledge Spanish dialects
  • Audio Conference Bonus: Walk away with a plan of action for communicating workplace safety issues to Hispanic employees

Workplace Safety and Hispanic Employees: Overcoming Language and Cultural Barriers is just $197.
