March 15, 2007
With each CD purchase, you get FREE access to streaming audio. CD and streaming audio are available 3 days after each live event.
Even though the live seminar on this topic has already taken place, you can still hear it! For your convenience, we've recorded it on CD and audio stream, so you can listen when you have time or share it with colleagues in your organization.
Is the union coming to your workforce? How can you find out?
Industry experts say union campaigns have an 80 percent success rate when organized from within a company. The success of a campaign depends on how well you and your supervisors communicate with employees. By training your supervisors to develop positive relationships with their teams, they can find out if workers are interested in bringing in a union.
Register today for Is the Union Coming? Early Warning Signs and learn how to train your supervisors to spot the clues of a campaign in progress, such as employees taking frequent breaks, huddles, and groupings of employees who normally don't socialize.
You'll also learn:
- How to find out who is involved with a union organizing campaign:
- Don't ask! It's illegal.
- Train your supervisors to use their eyes and ears.
- Early warning signals: talker/quiet employee, huddles, odd groupings, a sudden wanderer, unusual lunch groups, an employee suddenly taking frequent breaks, etc.
- Get to know your employees:
- Learn their interests, strong points, weak points, and other information to find out if they are interested in unionizing.
- Identify informal leaders to educate employees about the company. Traits of an informal leader:
- Tenured employee
- Does a good job
- Relatively quiet — a listener rather than a talker
- Respected by the employees
- Remember — if one informal leader votes against the union, you will also gain several additional "no" votes.
- The 25-50-25 Theory on union organizing. On any given day in a well managed facility, employees will vote:
- 25 percent for union
- 25 percent against union
- 50 percent have no clue
- And organizing drives often come from within an organization. Inside an organization equals an 80 percent likelihood of success, outside equals a 40 percent success rate.
