DIVERSITY & DISCRIMINATION Your organization's success may depend on your employees' ability to practice tolerance and acceptance of differing races, faiths, and cultures. While harassment gets most of the headlines, discrimination complaints and lawsuits continue to be major problems in workplaces. Train them on how diversity will help them work together courteously and effectively, regardless of race, color, gender, national origin, citizenship, age, military service, union activity, disability, religion, or any other personal characteristics. EMPLOYEE RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES While several state and federal laws do grant your staff certain rights, most employees believe they’re entitled to more, and often misunderstand the responsibilities that come with those rights. Harassment based on race, color, religion, ational origin, disability, or age can create legal nightmares. Make sure your employees know what to do when hearing a co-worker use the “n-word”, or if they witness a colleagues’ hostility toward Hispanics, Muslims, the mentally disabled, or someone over 50. These other forms of harassment are not always obvious. Show employees how to understand and avoid inappropriate behavior and language that might be harassment and know when and how to report such conduct. SEXUAL HARASSMENT Because many employees don’t really know which actions and language are and aren’t considered illegal. Train them on what they can’t do or say to coworkers, customers, and vendors.
