In November 2008, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) issued new Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations that included the agency's interpretations of the new military family leave requirements. Congress took issue with several of the DOL's positions on the circumstances in which employees were entitled to leave. To amend the FMLA further, the Supporting Military Families Act of 2009 was tacked on to the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2010, which was signed into law by President Barack Obama on October 28, 2009.
