New Updates

July 24, 2009: The last phase of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007 increased to $7.25 an hour.

The raise is the third and final increase as mandated by the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2007. An amendment to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) first increased the federal minimum wage to $5.85 per hour from $5.15 in July 2007, and the next July it increased to $6.55. Employers in most states are required to pay whichever minimum wage rate is higher, whether it be federal or state law.

Employers in 30 states are now required to pay the increase of $7.25 per hour.

When is the next federal minimum wage increase scheduled to occur?

There is a good chance we will see another minimum wage increase before the end of President Obama's term in office. During the 2008 campaign, Obama indicated he supported raising the minimum wage to $9.50 an hour by 2011 and indexing it to inflation. The issue will likely come up again since the Democrats gained a significant majority in both the House and Senate.

All states outlined in GREEN have been affected by the minimum wage increase.
